Cloudways vs DigitalOcean: The Quick Answer

Cloudways and DigitalOcean are not really rivals in the usual sense. DigitalOcean rents cloud servers, called Droplets, that you set up and run yourself. Cloudways is a managed hosting platform that runs on top of cloud infrastructure, including DigitalOcean, and handles the server stack, security, backups, monitoring and support for you. Cloudways is also a DigitalOcean company.

So the real question is whether you want to manage a server yourself or pay for a managed layer. For most people hosting WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento or PHP apps for a business or clients, Cloudways is our pick: you get cloud performance without becoming a system administrator. Go straight to DigitalOcean if you are comfortable running Linux servers, want the lowest possible infrastructure bill, or need a custom stack that a managed platform does not cover.

If you only run WordPress and do not want to think about servers at all, Kinsta, our #1 overall host, is the more hands-off option.

How Cloudways and DigitalOcean Are Related

DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider. Its pricing page describes the core Droplet offering as unmanaged, which means you are responsible for managing the server: the operating system, web server, PHP, database, caching, firewall rules, SSL, updates and backups are all on you.

Cloudways manages the server stack on infrastructure you choose from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS or Google Cloud, and you can switch provider later. When you launch a server on Cloudways and pick DigitalOcean, the underlying machine is a DigitalOcean server, but Cloudways installs and tunes the software, secures it, watches its health and gives you a dashboard to deploy applications in a few clicks. You deal with Cloudways for billing and support, not DigitalOcean.

That is why comparing their prices directly can mislead. A Cloudways plan includes the infrastructure plus the management work; a Droplet price covers the infrastructure only.

Pricing: What the Managed Layer Costs

Cloudways' Flexible plans start from $14 a month as shown by default on Cloudways' pricing page; prices vary by provider and server type. DigitalOcean's Basic Droplets start at $4 a month. The useful comparison is like for like, so the table below lines up Cloudways' default-listed plans with DigitalOcean Basic Droplets (Regular CPU) that list the same RAM, vCPU, storage and transfer.

On raw infrastructure, DigitalOcean is clearly cheaper. The difference is what you pay Cloudways to do the server work. Whether that is worth it depends on how much your time is worth and how much risk you are willing to carry. If you would otherwise spend regular time patching, tuning and troubleshooting a server, or pay someone to do it, the managed layer can be the cheaper option overall.

Both bill by usage with no long-term contract. Cloudways bills hourly, month to month. DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing from January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, and a monthly cap so you never pay more than the flat monthly price. See our Cloudways pricing guide for add-ons and other providers.

What Cloudways Adds on Top of the Server

A Tuned Web Stack

Every Flexible server runs Cloudways' Lightning Stack, built on NGINX and PHP-FPM, which Cloudways says delivers up to 65% faster load times. Redis cache is included free, and servers with 4 GB of RAM or more include Object Cache Pro, which Cloudways values at $95 a month. Multiple PHP versions are available.

Security and Backups

Cloudways includes a server-level Imunify360 firewall with IP and country blocking, bot, brute-force and DoS protection, malware scanning, a free WordPress vulnerability scanner and free Let's Encrypt SSL. Backups are automated and on demand with one-click restore. Automated malware removal is a paid add-on from $4 per app a month.

Monitoring and Auto-Healing

Cloudways monitors servers and applications across 15+ metrics, sends alerts through CloudwaysBot, and includes auto-healing servers. On a self-managed Droplet, you would set up your own monitoring and alerting.

Workflow Tools

Free advanced staging and cloning, vertical scaling, team collaboration and one-click application launches for WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, Laravel and other PHP frameworks are built in. You can host as many sites and apps on a server as its resources support, which makes Cloudways popular with agencies. See our PHP hosting and Magento hosting guides, where Cloudways is our #1 pick.

Support and Migration

Cloudways provides 24/7/365 expert support on all plans and states a 90-second average response time and 96% CSAT. Its engineers migrate your first website free. An Advanced Support add-on at $100 a month covers plugin and theme troubleshooting and performance optimization.

When DigitalOcean Direct Makes Sense

DigitalOcean is a well-regarded infrastructure provider, and going direct is a sensible choice for some teams:

  • You are comfortable with Linux administration. If you already patch servers, configure NGINX and handle backups, the managed layer adds less value.
  • You need a custom stack. Workloads that do not fit a managed PHP or WordPress platform, such as specialized databases or custom services, run naturally on a raw server.
  • Cost is the top priority. The same specs cost roughly half as much on a Basic Droplet, and the smallest Droplet starts at $4 a month.
  • You want full root control. An unmanaged server lets you change anything, which is also why the responsibility sits with you.

DigitalOcean Pros

  • Lower price for the same specs
  • Per-second billing with a monthly cap
  • Full control over the server
  • Droplets from $4 a month

DigitalOcean Cons

  • Unmanaged: you run the server
  • Security, backups and tuning are on you
  • No included support tier described for Droplets

Performance

When you choose DigitalOcean inside Cloudways, the hardware side is a DigitalOcean server either way. The performance difference comes from software and maintenance. Cloudways ships a tuned stack with caching layers already configured; on a Droplet, performance depends on how well you configure and maintain your own stack. An experienced administrator can match or exceed a managed setup, and a rushed setup can fall well short of it.

Cloudways states 99.99% uptime with high-availability environments. For global reach, Cloudways says it offers 50+ data center locations across its cloud providers, and a Cloudflare Enterprise CDN add-on is available from $4.99 per domain a month.
