WPX vs WP Engine: The Quick Answer
WPX and WP Engine are both managed WordPress hosts, which means each runs a platform built only for WordPress and handles much of the technical upkeep for you. They aim at different buyers. WPX focuses on value for site owners, bloggers, affiliate marketers and small businesses: low monthly prices, several sites per plan, daily backups kept 28 days, free malware removal and unlimited free migrations by its staff. WP Engine is one of the best-known managed WordPress platforms for businesses, agencies and enterprises, with long backup retention, team-focused development tools and a 99.99% uptime SLA from its Core tier.
For most individual site owners and small portfolios, WPX offers more included services for less money per site. WP Engine is a reasonable choice for teams that want its agency workflow, longer backup retention or enterprise options. If you want a premium platform with 30 data centers on Google Cloud, Kinsta is our #1 overall host.

Pricing: Plan by Plan
WPX publishes four main plans with a fixed number of sites on each. Annual and multi-year billing lowers the effective monthly cost, and WPX also sells WooCommerce-specific plans and an Agency tier for large portfolios.
| WPX Plan | Monthly List Price | Websites | Storage | Bandwidth | Business Email |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $17.99/mo | 1 | 10 GB | 100 GB | — |
| Business | $29.99/mo | 5 | 20 GB | 200 GB | Included |
| Professional | $59.99/mo | 15 | 40 GB | 400 GB | Included |
| Elite | $119.99/mo | 35 | 80 GB | Unlimited* | Included |
*Subject to WPX's reasonable-use policy. Monthly list prices published by WPX, October 2026, before taxes.
According to WP Engine's plans page, its plans are grouped into Essential, Core and Enterprise tiers, scaling by sites, visits, storage and bandwidth.
| WP Engine Plan | Price | Sites | Visits/Mo (Est.) | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | From $28/mo (annual) | 1–30 | 25k–400k | 75 GB |
| Core | Not listed publicly | 30–50 | 400k–800k | 550 GB |
| Enterprise | Custom | 50+ | 800k+ | 550 GB+ |
Listed on WP Engine's plans page, October 2026. Extra sites $20/mo each; taxes and overages may apply.
WP Engine's $28 a month is a starting price billed annually, which works out to $336 upfront. The tier you need depends on how many sites and how much traffic you have, so check the tier that matches your portfolio before you compare totals. WPX's prices are fixed per plan, which makes multi-site costs easy to predict. See WPX pricing for more detail.
Entry Price Per Month
Entry prices as listed by each provider in October 2026. Billing bases differ: WPX monthly list price, WP Engine billed annually, Kinsta shown both ways.
Cost Per Site
WPX's biggest advantage is price per site once you run more than one site. Because each plan includes a set number of sites, the cost per site falls as you move up.
| WPX Plan | Monthly List Price | Max Sites | Cost Per Site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $17.99 | 1 | $17.99 |
| Business | $29.99 | 5 | $6.00 |
| Professional | $59.99 | 15 | $4.00 |
| Elite | $119.99 | 35 | $3.43 |
Monthly list price divided by the plan's maximum number of websites.
On WP Engine, additional sites cost $20 a month each, according to its plans page. If you run a small portfolio of affiliate sites, niche blogs or client brochure sites, WPX's per-site pricing is hard to match. Our hosting for affiliate sites guide covers this use case in more depth.
Traffic and Bandwidth Limits
The two hosts measure usage differently. WPX sets storage and bandwidth per plan, from 100 GB of bandwidth on Starter to 400 GB on Professional, with Elite listed as unlimited under its reasonable-use policy.
WP Engine's tiers combine an estimated monthly visit range with a bandwidth allowance: 75 GB on Essential and 550 GB on Core, according to its plans page. It notes that overages may apply. With either host, check your analytics before you choose a plan, and size up if you expect a traffic spike from a launch or a seasonal sale.
Infrastructure and Performance
WPX runs its platform on its own cloud infrastructure, with LiteSpeed web servers, server-side caching and resources allocated per plan rather than drawn from an oversold shared pool. Higher plans add more CPU cores, more RAM and more PHP workers, which help dynamic WordPress pages such as carts, search and logged-in views respond under load. WPX also offers speed optimization help from its support team.
WP Engine runs a platform built exclusively for WordPress, with caching and environments tuned for larger sites. Higher tiers add more bandwidth, storage and support commitments. Both are well suited to WordPress; real-world speed depends on your theme, plugins and where your visitors are, so compare on your own content where possible.
CDN and Data Centers
WPX uses its own content delivery network, XDN, with 40+ endpoints, and its data centers are in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. That covers the main English-speaking markets well. WP Engine includes a Cloudflare-powered CDN, according to its plans page.
If your audience is spread across many continents, both hosts rely on their CDN to serve static files quickly. If you need an origin server close to visitors in Asia, South America or elsewhere, Kinsta offers 30 data centers to choose from.
Backups
WPX backs up every site daily and keeps backups for 28 days, so you can restore a version from up to four weeks back. You can restore backups from its dashboard.
WP Engine's backups are automatic and on-demand, kept for 30 to 60 days, according to its plans page. That is longer retention than WPX's 28 days. If you need backups kept for two months out of the box, WP Engine has the edge; for most sites, four weeks of daily backups is ample.
Security and Malware Removal
WPX includes free malware removal, handled by its staff, and backs its service with what it calls its Fixed For You guarantee. For site owners who do not want to hire a developer when something breaks, this is a valuable inclusion at WPX's price level.
WP Engine provides managed security for WordPress on its platform. Both hosts take security seriously. The practical difference is that WPX explicitly includes malware cleanup on every plan, which is useful if you run many small sites where one compromised plugin could affect your income.
Uptime Guarantees
According to WP Engine's plans page, a 99.99% uptime SLA starts on its Core tier, alongside faster support targets on higher tiers. That suits organizations that need a formal commitment in their contracts. If you need an SLA on an entry-level plan, Kinsta includes a 99.9% SLA-backed uptime guarantee on all sites, with up to 99.99% on its Enterprise plans.
Support
WPX offers 24/7 support through live chat and tickets, and it says its average chat response is about 30 seconds. It does not offer phone support. Support also covers speed optimization help and staff-run migrations, so you can hand over much of the technical work.
WP Engine provides 24/7 technical support on its plans, with priority support available as an add-on and faster response targets on higher tiers. If you want the same fast help on the cheapest plan, WPX's model is simpler; if you want support commitments that scale with a contract, WP Engine's higher tiers are built for that.
Migrations
WPX says its experts migrate your existing sites for free, with no cap on the number or size of sites, and that it typically gets back to you within 24 hours of a migration request. That is a strong offer for anyone moving a portfolio of sites at once.
According to WP Engine, managed migration services are part of its Core offering. On smaller plans, check what migration help is included before you buy. If you prefer to move a site yourself, follow our WordPress migration guide.
Dashboard and Developer Tools
WPX uses its own dashboard rather than cPanel. From one screen you can add sites, install WordPress, manage domains and DNS, enable XDN, issue SSL certificates, create staging sites, restore backups and open support chats. It is designed to be simple for non-technical owners.
WP Engine's user portal is built for teams, with staging environments and development tools that agencies and in-house developers value. It is less about simplicity for beginners and more about control and workflow for professionals. Developers who live in staging-to-production workflows may prefer WP Engine; owners who want a clean, fast dashboard may prefer WPX.
Email Hosting
WPX includes business email from its Business plan up, so you can create addresses on your domain without paying another provider. WP Engine does not include email hosting, so you will need a separate email service. For small businesses that want one bill, this is a clear point in WPX's favor. WPX does not include a free domain.
Multisite and Agencies
WPX supports WordPress Multisite but advises against it, and a multisite network uses one website slot on your plan. For most portfolios, WPX's model of separate sites on one plan is simpler. WPX also sells an Agency tier for large portfolios.
WP Engine's Essential tiers cover 1 to 30 sites, with additional sites at $20 a month, and its Core and Enterprise tiers scale to 50+ sites with larger bandwidth allowances. Agencies with demanding clients and contract requirements will find WP Engine's tiered structure familiar. See our WordPress multisite hosting guide if you plan to run a network.
WooCommerce
WPX sells WooCommerce-specific plans alongside its standard plans, and its higher tiers add more CPU, RAM and PHP workers for carts and checkouts. WP Engine also hosts WooCommerce stores on its managed WordPress platform. For busy stores, the isolation and data center choice of a premium host matter more, especially for stores where downtime costs sales.
Refunds and Billing
WPX offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, and annual or multi-year billing lowers its effective monthly cost. WPX also regularly runs first-month promotions. WP Engine's Essential plan is priced from $28 a month when billed annually, with taxes and overages possibly applied at checkout. Check the current refund terms on WP Engine's site before buying.
