The Best PHP Hosting for Apps and Websites

PHP still powers a huge share of the web. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento and frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony are all written in it. Because PHP is so common, almost every host claims to support it. The real differences are in the details: which PHP versions you can run, whether you get SSH, Composer and Git, how databases and caching are handled, and how easily you can grow from a small site to a busy application.

Here are our four picks for PHP hosting, ranked for PHP sites and applications specifically:

  • Bluehost: our #1 PHP host, a simple, well-known host with SSH access and room to move up to VPS.
  • ScalaHosting: our #2 pick, covering both affordable shared hosting for PHP sites and fully managed cloud VPS for larger apps.
  • Cloudways: our #3 pick. Managed cloud servers with one-click PHP frameworks and CMS, built for developers who want performance without running the server themselves.
  • AccuWebHosting: our #4 pick for budget Linux shared hosting with guaranteed resources, plus low-cost root-access VPS plans.

What Is PHP Hosting?

PHP hosting is web hosting that can run PHP code on the server. When someone visits a PHP page, the web server passes the request to PHP, which runs the script, usually queries a database such as MySQL or MariaDB, and returns HTML to the browser.

In practice, nearly all Linux hosting supports PHP. What separates a good PHP host from a basic one is the environment around it: current and selectable PHP versions, developer tools, database options, caching and enough server resources for your workload. A small contact-form site and a busy Laravel app both "use PHP," but they need very different hosting.

Shared vs Managed Cloud vs VPS for PHP Apps

PHP hosting comes in three main forms. Choose based on how much traffic you expect, how much control you need and how much server work you want to take on. Our shared vs VPS hosting guide goes deeper on the trade-offs.

What to Look For in a PHP Host

Current, Selectable PHP Versions

Each PHP release receives security updates for a limited time, and newer versions are generally faster. Your host should support current PHP versions and let you switch versions per site or per application, so you can upgrade on your own schedule and keep older code running while you test.

SSH, Composer and Git

Modern PHP development depends on Composer, the standard dependency manager, which needs command-line access. SSH lets you run Composer, framework tools such as Laravel's Artisan, and database commands. Git-based deployment makes releases repeatable and easy to roll back.

Databases

Most PHP apps use MySQL or MariaDB. Check how many databases your plan allows, whether you can manage them remotely, and whether storage is fast enough for your queries. On budget shared plans, database limits can matter more than disk space.

Caching: OPcache, Redis and More

OPcache keeps compiled PHP code in memory so scripts do not have to be recompiled on every request. Redis or Memcached can store sessions, cache data and queues. Varnish can cache full pages in front of the app. A host that makes these easy to enable will make your app noticeably faster under load.

Staging Environments

A staging copy lets you test code, PHP upgrades and dependency updates before they reach real users. Look for one-click staging or easy cloning.

Cron Jobs and Background Work

Many PHP apps rely on scheduled tasks for emails, cleanups, reports and queue processing. Your host should let you set cron jobs, and on larger apps, keep long-running workers alive.

PHP Workers and Resources

PHP workers (PHP-FPM processes) handle requests that cannot be served from cache. If every worker is busy, new requests wait in line. Enough CPU, RAM and workers keep dynamic pages fast during traffic spikes.

3. Cloudways: Best for PHP Frameworks

Cloudways is a managed cloud hosting platform, now a DigitalOcean company. It manages the server stack on infrastructure you choose from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS or Google Cloud, so you get a dedicated cloud server without having to configure and patch it yourself. You can run as many PHP applications on a server as it can handle, and you can switch cloud provider later. See our full Cloudways review.

Built for PHP Frameworks and CMS

Cloudways' PHP hosting page says you can launch PHP apps in one click and lists support for a wide range of frameworks and CMS:

TypeListed on Cloudways' PHP Page
FrameworksLaravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter, Yii, Lumen, Laminas
CMS and platformsJoomla, Drupal, Craft CMS, TYPO3, MODX, Grav, Sulu, October, Silverstripe, ClassicPress

4. AccuWebHosting: Best Budget Linux Hosting and VPS

AccuWebHosting has operated since 2003. Its Linux shared hosting runs cPanel on LiteSpeed servers, and AccuWeb says resources are guaranteed and never oversold, with dedicated RAM and CPU per account. That is a useful promise for PHP sites, because noisy neighbors are one of the main weaknesses of cheap shared hosting. See our AccuWebHosting review.

Hosting for Laravel, Symfony and Other PHP Frameworks

Frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony expect a modern environment: a recent PHP version, Composer, SSH, a web root pointed at the app's public folder, cron for scheduled tasks and often Redis for cache, sessions and queues. Shared hosting can run small framework apps, but configuration can be limiting.

  • Cloudways is the simplest option here, with one-click support for Laravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter, Yii, Lumen and Laminas on its PHP page, plus Redis included.
  • ScalaHosting and AccuWebHosting VPS give you root access to build the exact stack your framework needs.
  • AccuWeb.Cloud lists Laravel among its one-click apps.

Need Windows or .NET Instead?

PHP runs best on Linux, and all four picks above are Linux-based. If your project is built on ASP.NET, .NET or Microsoft SQL Server, you need Windows hosting instead. See our guide to the best Windows hosting, where AccuWebHosting is our top pick.

Running WordPress? Choose a WordPress Host

WordPress is written in PHP, but a WordPress site benefits most from a host that specializes in it. Our #1 overall host is Kinsta, a premium managed WordPress host on Google Cloud with server-level caching, a Cloudflare-powered CDN, automatic daily backups, free malware removal, free migrations by its own team and 24/7 support from WordPress engineers. Plans start at $35 a month.

How to Move a PHP App to a New Host

Moving a PHP site is usually straightforward, but apps with frameworks, queues and scheduled tasks have more moving parts than a simple website. A careful move follows a few steps:

  1. Match the environment. Set up the same PHP version, extensions and database engine on the new host before you copy anything.
  2. Copy code and data. Deploy the code (ideally from Git), run Composer to install dependencies, then export and import the database.
  3. Update configuration. Change database credentials, file paths, environment variables and cache settings such as Redis connection details.
  4. Recreate cron jobs and workers. Scheduled tasks and queue workers do not move automatically, so add them on the new server.
  5. Test on a temporary URL, including forms, logins, payments and emails, before switching DNS.
  6. Switch DNS and monitor error logs for the first few days, keeping the old hosting active until everything is stable.

Help is available from our picks. Cloudways says it will migrate your first website free, ScalaHosting includes free migrations, and AccuWebHosting includes free migration on its shared plans.

How to Choose PHP Hosting

Start with the size and type of project, then match it to a hosting model:

Your ProjectGood FitWhy
First website or WordPress-based PHP siteBluehostSimple plans, SSH, free first-year domain
Laravel, Symfony or custom PHP appCloudwaysOne-click frameworks, Redis, staging, scalable servers
Small PHP site or CMS on a budgetScalaHosting or AccuWebHosting sharedLow intro prices; SPanel or cPanel
Custom stack with full server controlScalaHosting or AccuWebHosting VPSRoot access; managed (Scala) or self-managed (AccuWeb)
Business WordPress siteKinstaPremium managed WordPress hosting

A few rules of thumb help too. Look past intro prices to renewal rates, since most hosts charge more after the first term. Pick a host that lets you upgrade without a painful migration, because PHP apps tend to grow. And treat staging and backups as essentials rather than extras: they are what let you upgrade PHP versions and dependencies safely.

Other Hosts You'll See Compared

Other providers appear regularly in PHP hosting comparisons. Their current plan details are not covered on this page, so here is a brief qualitative overview. Check each provider's own site for current specs and pricing.

  • Hostinger: a budget-focused host with shared, cloud and VPS plans. See our Hostinger review.
  • SiteGround: a managed host known for its custom tools and support. See our SiteGround review.
  • Hosting.com (formerly A2 Hosting): long associated with developer-friendly shared hosting. See our Hosting.com review.
  • DigitalOcean: a cloud infrastructure provider popular with developers who want to manage their own servers. It is also one of the providers you can choose through Cloudways.
  • InMotion Hosting: offers shared, VPS and dedicated hosting for business sites. See our InMotion Hosting review.

PHP Hosting FAQs

Does All Web Hosting Support PHP?

Nearly all Linux hosting supports PHP. The differences are in which PHP versions you can choose, developer tools such as SSH and Composer, database limits, caching and server resources.

What Is the Best PHP Hosting for Laravel?

Our Laravel hosting guide ranks Bluehost first. For one-click Laravel, Cloudways is the simplest option. Its PHP hosting page lists one-click Laravel along with Symfony and other frameworks, and its plans include Redis, staging and hourly billing. A root-access VPS from ScalaHosting or AccuWebHosting also works if you want to build the stack yourself.

Is Shared Hosting Good Enough for PHP?

For small sites and CMS installs, often yes. For busy apps, background workers or custom server software, a managed cloud server or VPS is a better fit.

What Is the Cheapest PHP Hosting?

Among our picks, AccuWebHosting's Bootstrap ++ plan starts at $2.79 a month on a 36-month term and lists the same renewal price. ScalaHosting Mini starts at $2.95 a month (intro) for one website.

Can I Run Multiple PHP Versions?

Many hosts let you choose PHP versions per site or app. Cloudways supports multiple PHP versions on its platform, and on a VPS you control which versions are installed.

Is There a Free Trial for PHP Hosting?

Cloudways offers a 3-day free trial with no credit card required, and AccuWeb.Cloud lists a 14-day free trial. ScalaHosting, AccuWebHosting shared and Bluehost offer money-back policies instead.
