DigitalOcean Review (2026): Droplets, Pricing and the Managed Question
Updated October 2026
DigitalOcean at a Glance: The Short Verdict
DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider with simple published pricing. Its core product, the Droplet, is a virtual server that starts at $4 a month, billed by usage with a monthly cap. Around it, DigitalOcean sells managed databases, Kubernetes, object storage, load balancers, an app platform and GPU servers.
The short version: DigitalOcean is a strong fit for developers and teams comfortable running their own servers. DigitalOcean itself says the core Droplet offering is "unmanaged, which means you are responsible for managing the server." If you want cloud performance for WordPress or PHP sites without doing that work, a managed layer on top of the cloud may be a better fit.
What Is DigitalOcean?
DigitalOcean rents cloud computing resources that you assemble yourself. Its pricing page lists these starting prices in October 2026:
| Product | What It Is | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|
| Droplets | Virtual servers | $4/mo |
| App Platform | Platform for deploying apps | $0/mo |
| Kubernetes | Managed Kubernetes clusters | $12/mo |
| Databases | Managed databases | $15/mo |
| Spaces | Object storage | $5/mo |
| Volumes | Block storage | $10/mo |
| Load Balancers | Traffic distribution | $12/mo |
| Support Plans | Paid support tiers | $0/mo |
As listed on DigitalOcean's pricing page, October 2026. GPU Droplets, Functions, a container registry and VPC are also listed.
DigitalOcean also owns Cloudways, the managed hosting platform. Cloudways runs managed servers on DigitalOcean and other clouds, and DigitalOcean's support documentation notes that its own support plans apply only to DigitalOcean, not to Cloudways.
Who it is for, in brief: developers, startups and technical teams who want straightforward infrastructure and are happy to handle the operating system, web server, security and backups themselves.

How DigitalOcean Bills
DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing from January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher, and a monthly cap so you never pay more than the flat monthly price. You are invoiced at the start of each month for the previous month's usage. DigitalOcean's pricing page states that it does not offer refunds, though you can raise extenuating circumstances with support.
Budget for add-ons as well. Backups cost 20% of the Droplet price per month for weekly backups or 30% for daily backups, and block storage, load balancers and managed databases are billed separately.
Key Features
Simple Building Blocks
DigitalOcean's appeal is its small, clear catalog. Droplets, volumes, object storage, load balancers and a virtual private cloud (listed at $0 a month) cover most web workloads, and managed databases and Kubernetes take care of two of the harder pieces to run yourself.
App Platform for Code Deployments
App Platform, listed from $0 a month, lets you deploy applications without managing a Droplet directly. It suits developers shipping apps rather than people hosting a WordPress site through a control panel.
Full Root Control
Because a Droplet is unmanaged, you can install any stack you like. The same freedom means you are responsible for the operating system, web server, PHP, database, caching, firewall, SSL, updates and backups.
Support, Backups and Security
Support: DigitalOcean lists support plans from $0 a month on its pricing page, and its documentation says support plans cannot be prepaid. For server-level problems on an unmanaged Droplet, the fix is generally yours to make.
Backups: Automated Droplet backups are a paid add-on at 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet's monthly cost.
Security: DigitalOcean provides the infrastructure; securing the server, from firewall rules to patching, is your job on a Droplet.
Migrations: On an unmanaged Droplet, moving a site in is a do-it-yourself job.
DigitalOcean Pros and Cons
Pros
- Droplets from $4 a month
- Per-second billing with a monthly cap
- Hourly rates listed for every Droplet
- Clear catalog of cloud building blocks
- Full root control
Cons
- Unmanaged: you run the server
- Backups cost extra
- No refunds stated on the pricing page
- No control panel or managed WordPress stack
Who Should Use DigitalOcean?
DigitalOcean suits developers and teams who already manage Linux servers, need a custom stack, or want low-cost infrastructure for apps, APIs and staging environments. It is a less natural fit for business owners, bloggers and agencies who want WordPress, WooCommerce or PHP sites to run well without becoming system administrators. For them, a managed platform on the same cloud is the practical route.
